Bucharest

Bucharest is one of the largest cities in both Eastern and Central Europe. It is located in the south of Romania with geographical coordinates of 26.5 degree eastern longitude and 44.24 degree northern latitude.

Bucharest is both the capital of Romania and its largest city. Located in the South of the country, in the center of a vast plain, Bucharest is close to the Danube River and the border with Bulgaria. Its settlements date back to prehistoric times. The cluster of villages blossomed into a large city thanks to the major trade routes connecting Western Europe with the East, and the North of the continent with the South.

Bucharest was also of prime strategic importance during the turbulent Middle Ages. Its position allowed military commanders to oversee the entire territory surrounding the Danube.

Bucharest was the ruler’s residence, a military citadel and the capital of Wallachia alongside with Targoviste.
